On another forum I saw the topic of breeds where someone asked "What is wrong with the Bandog?"

I replied to the topic, but thought I would offer my comment here as well.

Many, in fact most, "Bandog" breeders breed hype and don't properly test the performance of their dogs. Many don't do any work with them at all. Then many also use too many breed components which throws consistency (even consistent performance) out the window. And, few "Bandoggers" work together. This is why the SSDA dissociating itself from the Bandog community to a great extent. We honestly have found it easier to work with others on our project by attracting people not all wrapped up in the internet or "Bandog politics." IMO, the "Bandog" has been on its way in, but before it really succeeds it will probably end up on the way out due to the types of people the breed attracts and how THESE PEOPLE ACT. They are not doing the breed any favors.

SO, on that note...the SSDA has distanced itself from the general "bandog" world on purpose to a large extent by not over emphasizing the "Bandog" name...but using the "Swinford" name while we developed and defined the breed to our likings...and this distancing is going to occur to even a greater extend in time...as much will be released at a later date and I believe when this happens people within the Bandog world will be surprised at just how far things have gone with the SSDA.

In the end, there has to be a distinct goal within any serious program...and most "Bandog" programs simply don't have specific goals and that is why the majority of them fail in time and why the breed never reached it true potential. I am certain our project will be one of the few that will succeed...but it will do this with a different name than the others simply because the name "Bandog" is essentially ruined due to a lack of distinct goals, consistency, or specificity within the breed.

Sounds like the pit bull problem. Gotta keep them in the right hands.

Status quo.

Herder fans generally don't like to see other breeds consistently do well. A herder import can be thousands of dollars. Why do all that work when you can find a good APBT for 500 or even less?

Molossers, especially in their pure bred form, though are not generally going to do very well IMO for sports. They are usually too slow and lacking in prey drive. Some are overly suspicious as well once "defense" work is introduced...and many go into flight as a result. It takes both a good dog and a good trainer to work one well enough to do well in sports.

i agree completely with the post. As i began to take an interest in big dogs a few years ago i purchased supposedly a dog that would surely give his life for me. the guy called this dog a bandog ... HIs breeding consisted of neo mastiff, am bulldog, english bulldog, a little pit and of all things sharpei.. this animal started out really good gaining weight and all that. He was expected to get up to the weight of 80 lb or better but he topped out at about 50lbs at the age of 6 mos. you wouldn't believe it but the dog didnt gain any weight for the next few years that i had him. He did get stronger and had an impressive shape but that wasnt the problem.

Maybe i wouldn't have minded the dogs size if his temperament was strong or even his health was as it need to be. I literally forked out thousands of dollars on vet bills dealing with this dogs so sensitive digestive track (i could count the times this dog had healthy stool) vet says it was allergies. On top of that i had to get 3 surgical proceedures doon to fix the dogs entrophia. on top of all that the dogs nerves were terrible as he would have been a fear biter if put in  the right situations.

As there are few good breeding programs out there the Bandog name is overrated. it has been my experience that many of the muts in the world have had as good of or better temperament and drive as many working and police dogs today and some of the supposed high quality dogs are only successful due to the great training they are exposed to. never the less ....as Lee says, you produce performance by selecting for it. no matter what you are getting a dog for this is true. An old man told me something a long time ago... he said " there is no perfect dog and there are no perfect people but the magic happens when there is a meeting somewhere in the middle of the two. The dog understands and brings everything he has to the plate and man does the same. this is when you truly have man's best friend."

hi simeon, sorry to hear that about your dog. bandogs are becoming the fad now IMO, and their are very few doing like Lee, there is a  big differance between a real breeder and someone selling pups. Any real program shouldn't have to say anything about their dogs they should be able to show you what their dogs are about and only listen to other owners of their dogs thats where the proof is in any program. As far as dogs go its put up or shut up IMO and any serious program should show you at least 3 generations of their dogs or their just selling pups. But all this isn't new, just bandogs are the new victim of the puppy peddlers.Any program is only as good as its purpose and no breed is uniform they just appear the same, most assume they act and perform the same too this includes health issues.
