Is social aggression really a precursor to rank drive? I'm starting to think that what i thought before was a rank dog is really just a hot dog. If a dog bites his owner, to me it is a communication problem between handler and dog and not usually rank. | |

Social aggression isn't a precursor to rank drive, but rank drive is certainly one precursor to social aggression. You have to think "cause-effect.". Rank drive is when a dog is when a dog is aggressive for dominance reasons. Social aggression is when a dog is aggressive socially. A dog can certainly be socially aggressive for dominance reasons (which is why rank drive leads to one type of social aggression), but it could also be aggressive socially because of defense too.
Also, a dog can bite its owner for many reasons. I have never been bit by one of my dogs and I maintain communication with them that suggests that isn't allowed...all except for 3 of my dogs that I have done work with while Courtney or Wendy handle while I work...and those 3 are Lynn, Tate, and Annie Oakley. Even these 3 dogs though are clear in the head and never even thought of targetting me off the training field.
