I was watching a documentary about Wolves in Yellow Stone, and the huge problems they create for farmers and their live stock, They talked about how bad the problem was and about some of the measures taken to prevent loss, but not one time did someone mention using dogs! There are a numerous big mountain dogs that should be able to protect cows from such predators, am I right? The fact that non of the ranchers mentioned using dogs, makes me question if there is ANY breed of dog out there that realistically would be fierce enough, big enough and inteligent enough to succeed against wolves.

I know those breeds have been used for centuries, this is why I was surprised they didin't bring that up in this documentary. Those farmers have got to be aware of such dog breeds and their function, and since they have a hard time controlling the wolves, I would think it would only make sence for them to start using dogs. One farmer lost $100K just because his cattles were skinnier than usual, and according to him, the stress factor of having wolves roaming around disturbs the cows diet. So when its time to sell the cows the lighter they are, the more money you loose.

Someone need to let them know it'll be much cheaper to keep 7-8 dogs around the farm :)

Nico, the ranchers are just whining for a government subsidy for purported wolf losses.  In the USA, corporations are the biggest welfare recipients, instead of poor people.  The ranchers in my opinion are lying.  They could have dogs and they absolutely work but it is easier to lobby for a tax payer handout.

If this is the case, I find it pretty sad.
