How do you raise a puppy to live outside to be able to protect property at night?  Assume the dog has proper shelter and is suited to living outdoors.  All of my dogs over the years have always slept in the house at night and were indoors with the family etc.  .

So, let us say that hypothetically, a person wanted a dog to stay outdoors at night to protect their outbuildings, tractors etc, how do you go about raising a puppy to be comfortable and happy in that role as opposed to sleeping indoors at night?

Start with breeds known for territorial protectiveness.

Let the dog spend the days inside and with the family sleeping and enjoying family life then put the dog out at night to work.    Use freinds as fake bad guys to help arose the dogs after dark in order for them to learn what actions should be taken when a stranger is discovered around their area.  Encourage and praise alert barking and protective actions when they occur.

Often 2 dogs are better as 1 can easily be distracted by one perpetrator while a second perp commits the crime.

Hope this helps you get started.
